Does anyone know of a good source to trace back Cub serial numbers and try to find out more about their past history?

Ok, this can get rather involved, First I would get in contact with Clyde Smith, Jr. ( www.cubdoctor.com ) supply him with your serial number (from the data plate ) He will write a nice report from the factory notes that he has. This report will include serial number, Fuse Number (which is different than the Serial number) Original registration number, options, Mfg date and roll out date. There is also some other neat info. It is just one page but there is some vital info for $18.00

Then, If it was Ex-Military get your Aircraft card from Maxwell AFB, turn it over to someone like Jim Gray (akdhc2pilot@yahoo.com) Pres of the Sentinel Club to interpret. It'll cost but, well worth it.

As far as the Civilian records, that is just a case of getting the Feds to dig through their archives...

Hope that helps,
Tailwinds,
FreddyK

Thanks, I have contact with both! I'm more looking for the Civilian side on this. We have a Cub about to turn 70 and I was hoping to get some information.

Aaahhh! Well, getting copies of what the FAA has in their archives is about the only option.
In the case of my L-4 I did the above and have been able to get a good idea of its life. I just wish I knew what it did in Italy, why it came back to the states via San Francisco. Guess I'll never know!

Hope you find the info your looking for....

Ryan,

The best way is to contact AOPA member services and arrange to have the staff in OKC do a title search and chain of ownership. That will tell you everyone who has ever owned that airplane since day one.
