Hello, I came across this forum when searching for info on whether a glider was ever used to carry a spotter aircraft. It seems a bit far fetched to me, but since I read this, written by an Operation Dragoon pilot, I would like to know more:

I'm currently doing research into the WWII history of the 25th Liaison Squadron

and have run into what appears to be a not uncommon situation during the war.

In spite of the fact that this outfit had its own approved insignia (18 Jan 43),

I have come across numerous photos depicting a different design bearing the

inscription 'Guinea Short Lines' and featuring the full side profile of a jumping

Kangaroo.

I was hoping someone on this Forum might be able to provide some insight ...

I am interested in anything that comes from the 14th Liaison Squadron. I am looking for photos, members families, memorabilia connected with the squadron. The 14th LS was 9th Air Force and attached to Patton's Third Army. The squadron went ashore in France July 7th 1944, and served through the end of the war flying thousands of hours in Stinson L-5's. Thanks to Ryan for putting up this board.

There was slim pickings on several types of the L-birds at OSH 2009. The ones that were there were very nice, just not enough of them made the trip. Here are a few shots.

There was a good turnout of L-19s, and L-17s.

Sorry about the pics, did lots of looking and very little shooting.

This year includes the Canadian Snow Birds, F-15 Demo, Golden Knights, some of those flip flopping planes, and lots of warbirds. Lots of people make it part of their trip to Midland.
Hey there,

I was replacing some phillips screws with slotted on my L-4 and as I was tightening down one of the last ones, the screwdriver slipped and put a nice 6" gash right down the middle of the center window of my upper door. I didn't want to spend the money on an aviation repair kit, so I tried an auto parts store. There were several to choose from, and I went for the cheapest. Turtle Wax has one for about $8. They're meant to repair yellowed or scratched headlight lenses.

I have been trying to find info on the type of first aid kits that would have been mounted/carried in L-Birds during WWII. I would assume it would be the standard "Kit, First Aid Aeronautic". The only reference I have found so far has been to a pocket sewn into the upholstry of one of the seat cushions in the L-4 for the "First Aid Kit".

Was there a different kit designed for the Grasshoppers or did they also ...

anyone have any thoughts? See the link below to see what I'm looking at....

The airframe metal is in great shape for a 66 year old airframe.

The bolt holes at the airframe “hard points” – wing attach, engine mount, tail feathers attachment, landing gear, wing strut are not elongated or scored internally.

The bearing surfaces of the axles are smooth and not scored.

There are some tubes that need repair but they are simple

repairs. Some already replaced.

I am trying to locate a company that can repair or re-construct my existing button-lock control cables for a Stinson L-5E project. The outer casings of both cables are cracked in several places which causes the cable to kink when rounding corners which in turn tends to stiffen the push-pull movement of the cable.

I have contacted several companies and the overall conclusion seems to be that they are not repairable or it would not be economically feasible to repair them. Has anyone else ever ...

I saw a Disney designed patch for the Aeronca L birds before, but don't think I have a copy of it. Think the grasshopper on that one was looking through binoculars.

I know it's a bit of a reach to include the 6's but the name ...

The general consensus is that no L-2s were shipped overseas during WW2. The only discussed possibility has been an ILPA Association recount by a veteran serving in North Africa who claims he was flying an L-2 in that theatre. I can't find my copy of that edition but I do not believe an aircraft number was given so it remains unsubstantiated.

I'm presently running down some shipping inventories which would suggest several Taylorcrafts were shipped to UK between 1940 and 1943. No models are ...

Hey guys,

Nice to see an L-bird forum. I grew up on a cropdusting strip near Harlingen, Tx and we had all kinds of lbirds there, including an L-18 (it doubled as a museum). At the time, I didn't really care for those "little planes"--like most kids, I was glazing over the bigger airplanes like the T-6 that the agpilot flew for fun. I was getting ready to get some formal flight training in an L-4 from the agpilot when I heard the next morning that he suffered a heart attack and died. ...

Does anyone have any photos of Stinson's in RAF service, particularly any still flying? As far as I know there's only one Stinson in the UK at all, an airworthy one in US markings. As far as I know, the RAF only used Stinson L-5's in the far east, so would have the SEAC (South East Asia Command) roundel, which is dark blue on the outside and light blue inside, changed from the usual blue/white/red so the red circle wouldn't be misidentified as a Japanese aircraft.

Too far for most of you but never know, someone in the UK or near may see this and come along. We currently have 73 Austers booked in for this fly-in at the Army Air Corps Airfield at Middle Wallop, Hampshire, UK. As well as the 73 booked to arrive, there are three Austers in the Museum of Army Flying and several others elsewhere on site. The largest number of Austers at a fly-in previous to this is believed to be about 46, so this should be the largest Auster fly-in ever held
